The unveiling of the iPhone 2.0 App Store brought a bunch of bad, one good, and a potentially good (once they get iPhone/Dekstop sync working) solution to bear. In short, take a look at OmniFocus for a "it exists now and works" solution, and Things (by the makers of Xyle Scope--one of the best web design tools) for a "hopefully within a month or two they will have desktop sync working" candidates.

Any update on this? I'm looking at Daylite, which is overkill and mainly CRM, have Entourage and don't like it either (you could probably prit as a pdf or by grabbing it in preview, though) and want everything in one place.

I also need to sync between my laptop and desktop.

Thanks.

Murray - have you made any headway on your new cocoa app? Would love to hear more about this as you progress!

I don't think any app is going to give you everything you want (at least not yet). The next generation of kgtd (OmniFocus) should be coming out soon, which looks promising!

In the meantime, you might want to take a second look at Entourage. Over the past several months, I've put together a set of AppleScripts that (I think) address a lot of your concerns. One in particular, implements an automated tickler file. You can find these on my blog (www.earth2adam.com) or on macupdate, etc.

Good luck!

This is beautiful... I just got a MacBook Pro, and I was literally on the phone with apple, asking them the best way to sync iCal, with a To-Do software, and have it operate on the web much an MS Enterprise App.

Google'd it, and read your blog!! can't wait to see what you come up with.

thanks.

I hope you do create something as I have spent countless hours trying and deleting the variety of to-do managers out there in the last couple of months. I want everything you want!!!

I looked at these solutions (Yojimbo just now, Kinkless several months ago). Yojimbo does have the iSync and Spotlight features that I want in my application, but it's more of a loose scrapbook than anything else. I'm really wanting a task manager that's like the iCal tasks on steroids. It's also a little weird in how specific it's different types of notes are—RTF note scraps, web archives or application serial numbers.

I'm hoping to have something like iCal tasks but with additional items like % completed, grouping tasks into larger projects where you always know which task is your "next actionable item" and maybe having some idea of task dependencies. And finally, I would want the ability for my "iProject" tasks to appear back in the iCal calendar as iCal tasks.

I looked at the OmniOutliner solution (I think there were one or two) but they had the disadvantage of, as you mentioned, buying the OmniOutliner Pro application, plus you were generally stuck with keeping your projects on your desktop or laptop. (Ie. missing Sync capability.)

I don't mean to come across as an asshole here. I really appreciate your sharing your discoveries here. And of course before I really commit to this project (as a possible revenue-earning shareware application) I need to do a series examination of all possible competing products. So thanks for writing those comments.

Kinkless GTD is an "Applescript" application which does much of what you describe. I'm using it now. The only drawback is that you must have a copy of OmniOutliner Pro (about $70, if memory serves) in order to use it. (The Applescripts sit on top of that application.)

That said, it's not bad. However, I think the price tag is a bit hefty if you only plan to use OmniOutliner Pro with Kinkless. (If you're thinking of installing this, make sure that you get the latest beta.)
